History:
The kama was originally a traditional Filipino and Japanese farming implement similar to a sickle or scythe and was used for cutting grass and reaping crops. In 1470, when traditional weapons were confiscated and outlawed by the Japanese military, commoners began utilizing farming implements as weapons. The kama was utilized as a fighting blade and was often attached to a chain for greater reach. This longer weapon was known as a kusarigama.
